Interactive Soundscapes - Inclusive Sound Installation at Tate Modern

I took a course in 2019 that led me to the community focused building of the Tate. Sadly the course did not work out, but there was an opportunity to engage the public in what I do. With the aim of making the activity inclusive I thought to use a Leap sensor. This module captures 3 dimensional hand movement as well as gestures. The data can be tracked as MIDI and used with audio software.

So I created a dynamic soundscape composition of environmental sounds (I wanted to use sounds from around the Tate but it wasn’t possible at the time). This was customisable by the user via dials. The sensor allowed the user to ‘capture’ a sound and begin to manipulate it (via granular synthesis) simply by moving their hands around the space and making gestures. I also delivered a few micro -listening workshops to groups of school children that came through the space.
