Field Recording - Hearing the Music in Sounds

What is Field Recording?

Field Recording is the capturing of audio of a space outside the studio. In a way, it’s like taking the studio outside. The subject of the recording is not necessarily a musician, but perhaps the environment or any sonic artifact. Field recordings have multiple purposes in todays music. Either as samples, as sonic textures in music, or for films, games and other media.

My interest in field recording grew during my time at university. My friends and I took to using our phones to record our music more and more. Then we took this to recording random things we found in the world. We didn’t have any concept of field recording, it was just super fun to record things. As time went on, we invested in some real equipment.

Later I put together a monthly series for a shortwhile, that offered people field recording montages of various locations. It was called ‘Sound Radio’.
